Dental Care

Dental disease is one of the most frequently diagnosed health problem in pets. Common symptoms of dental disease include tartar build up, gingivitis (red or bleeding gums), bad breath, and occasionally signs of discomfort around the mouth and changes in eating habits, although most pets will suffer in silence. Food debris and bacteria accumulate around the teeth, which can cause inflammation and infection of the gums and bone surrounding the teeth. This results in irreversible periodontal disease, which causes significant oral pain. Dental disease can also affect other organs in the body, as bacteria from the mouth can travel through the bloodstream to reach the kidneys, liver, lungs, and heart.

THE BENEFITS OF PREVENTATIVE CARE
Identification of dental disease starts with a thorough physical exam. If caught early enough, plaque and tartar build up on the teeth can be managed with tooth brushing, water additives and veterinary diets and treats designed to “scrub” plaque off of your pet’s teeth.

EXPECT MORE WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR PET'S DENTAL HEALTH
Our clinic is fully equipped to manage all of our patient’s dental health needs with a dedicated dental suite including a dental unit similar to the one used by your own dentist; a fully digital dental x-ray unit to properly assess the health of each tooth; and advanced anaesthetic monitoring equipment to help ensure the utmost safety of your pet while under general anesthesia.  Dr. Nicole Stone has completed continuing education and additional training in dentistry including dental surgery, and is currently working toward completing her certification with the International Veterinary Dentistry Institute.

Our veterinary technicians are also extremely knowledgeable, skilled and experienced in managing dental cases, so you can rest assured that your beloved pet is in good hands with our team.

YOUR PET'S COMFORT IS OUR PRIORITY
If periodontal disease or another form of dental disease is identified during your pet’s exam, we will discuss the benefits of a COHAT (“comprehensive oral health assessment and treatment”). This involves a thorough assessment of your pet’s teeth and oral health under anesthesia, including dental radiographs to evaluate the health of the teeth below the gumline, as well as any individualized treatments that may be indicated (a thorough scale and polish, root planing or extraction of teeth) to keep your pet’s mouth healthy and comfortable.

did you know:
two thirds of a dogs tooth lives below the gum line, which means dental disease often goes unnoticed until it begins affecting their eating and behaviour with pain. Preventative care makes all the difference!
